Propane and ethane production has potential to make Washington County, Pennsylvania, an international hotspot

Whereas just a few years ago Pennsylvania was a net importer of propane, MarkWest Energy said that there is “a near-100 percent likelihood” that any propane purchased in the area this summer “was produced from gas extracted from the Marcellus Shale,” according to the Observer-Reporter. In addition, the “advent of separating ethane and selling it to  cracking plants to convert it to ethylene” has the potential to “make Washington County an international center for the product,” the article said. MarkWest’s de-ethanization plant there is set to be completed in mid-2013, and the company is also constructing an ethane pipeline toward Canada and a propane pipeline for export overseas, the article said.
