Dr. Robert W. Chase, professor and chairman of the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geology at Marietta College, recently wrote an op/ed piece for The Akron Beacon Journal insisting that the United States cannot afford to let misinformation dictate the shale gas drilling debate. Among the five myths with which Chase disagreed were beliefs that hydraulic fracturing can cause tap water to become flammable; that it can contaminate the aquifers that supply drinking water; and that it is the cause of recent earthquake activity.
