Ohio company's patented frac ball technology was derived from weapons defense research

Rigzone featured an article recently that explores the research and development history behind the TervAlloy frac balls that Euclid, Ohio-based Terves Inc. is now marketing (See our Aug 01, 2013, blog post – "Powdermet Inc. launches a second spinoff company targeting the oil and gas industry"). The new "patented, environmentally responsive lightweight metallic materials" were developed out of parent company Abakan Inc.'s "beryllium research in 2003 and research [the company] conducted from 2005 to 2007 for the U.S. Department of Defense's Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) on thermites and reactives such as titanium-boron."
