Ohio approaches milestones for Utica shale permits, producing wells

Ohio’s oil and natural gas industry is very close to reaching two major milestones – 2,000 horizontal drilling permits and 1,000 producing horizontal wells -- in the Utica shale play, reports the Akron Beacon Journal. Citing data from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), the newspaper says ODNR had issued 1,997 Utica shale permits as of August 22 and that 998 wells were producing natural gas and/or oil. The totals are since Ohio’s shale drilling boom began in late 2010.
