FirstEnergy plans to demolish power plant at proposed site for Ohio ‘cracker’

FirstEnergy Corp. said the company’s coal-fired R.E. Burger Power Plant in Belmont County, Ohio will be demolished, reports the Wheeling Intelligencer/News-Register, which also says Ohio leaders “remain tight-lipped about a $5.7 billion ethane “cracker” plant possibly coming to that site. According to the newspaper, Thailand-based PTT Global Chemical and Tokyo's Marubeni Corp. will decide by the end of 2016 whether to build the petrochemical complex at the site, which could include the 130-acre Burger property and surrounding land along the Ohio River. A FirstEnergy spokeswoman told the Intelligencer/News-Register that demolition plans are ongoing as company officials "carefully evaluate proposals for the former operating facility."
