Fire at oilfield chemicals business results in evacuations in Pittsburgh area

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports a plume of black smoke from a fire at an oilfield chemicals business in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania on November 17th caused the evacuation of more than 70 homes and prompted several schools to keep students indoors. The newspaper says a building owned by Ohio-based Lubrizol Corp. was “heavily damaged by an explosion and fire that quickly spread to another building.” Lubrizol makes chemical treatments for oil and gas wells and additives used during drilling and hydraulic fracturing in shale formations, according to the Tribune-Review.
