AEP plans to convert coal-burning power units to natural gas

American Electric Power (AEP) plans to modify its coal-burning unit at the Cardinal Plant near Brilliant, Ohio to run on natural gas by 2030, continuing the company's shift away from coal to comply with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, reports the Wheeling Intelligencer/News-Register. In addition, the newspaper says AEP would develop at least 900 megawatts of wind and solar energy projects in Ohio over the next five years as part of the company's proposed agreement with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. AEP also plans to convert two units at its Conesville Plant in Coshocton County, Ohio to co-fired natural gas by the end of 2017.
