Confirmation of link between injection well and recent earthquakes leads to new disposal rules

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources announced today that its researchers have determined that a brine disposal well was responsible for the recent seismic activity in the Youngstown area, according to a press release from the ODNR. As a result, the department is proposing new safeguards that include the prohibition of any new wells drilled into the Precambrian rock formation; required submission of extensive geological data before drilling; and the implementation of "state-of-the-art pressure and volume monitoring devices including automatic shut-off switches and electronic data recorders," the release said. For more, including a comprehensive list of the proposed new regulations, visit the ODNR site here.
