Environmental concerns over fracking delay lease auction of Wayne National Forest
|
The Columbus Dispatch reports that a plan by the federal government to auction leases for up to 3,302 acres of Wayne National Forest has been put on hold following a wave of protests from environmental advocates and local government officials. Although approximately 1,300 wells already exist on 8,121 leased acres of the forest, opponents claim that the hydraulic fracturing process used to drill into Ohio's Utica shale is not only more damaging to the environment than the methods used with conventional wells, but also has a greater potential for water contamination.
