Muskingum Watershed District's shale deal sparks protest
|
In response to the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District – which covers 20 percent of Ohio – selling 11 million gallons from Clendening Lake in Harrison County to Gulfport Energy Corp., several groups recently testified in the MWCD's Conservancy Court that the sale undermines the district's goal of promoting conservation and recreation, Gongwer reports (see the Apr 24, 2012, blog – "Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District sells water and leases mineral rights to oil and gas companies"). Proponents argue that this and future sales could help the district financially, while opponents argue that the deals are being made with little public input and are using the water in such a way that it cannot be returned to the water cycle, the article said.
